Unai Emery has expressed his support for Ollie Watkins and believes that the player will bounce back from the disappointment of being overlooked for the England squad. Despite not representing his country since March 2022, when he scored in a victory against Ivory Coast, Watkins was not chosen by Gareth Southgate for the recent internationals against Ukraine and Scotland, with Callum Wilson and Eddie Nketiah selected ahead of him.
Although Watkins has yet to score in the Premier League this season, he displayed his prowess by netting a hat-trick in Aston Villa’s Europa Conference League play-off first leg triumph over Hibernian. Last season, he played a vital role in Villa’s successful bid to finish in the top seven, scoring nine goals in 11 games. However, his recent track record has seen a dip in form, with just one goal in his last 11 appearances.
When quizzed about Watkins’ exclusion from the England squad, Emery commented, “He has to demand a lot from himself, but he also needs to have confidence. He must continue in the same form he has shown with us – and I believe he will score goals.”
Emery continued, praising Watkins’ recent displays: “He is performing extremely well. Last week, he may not have scored, but his overall performance was exceptional. If he maintains this consistency, along with his strong mentality, he will earn his place in the national team. Although there are many talented players vying for a position in the England squad, I have faith that Ollie will make it because of his current outstanding performances.”
When asked if he had discussed the matter with Watkins, Emery replied, “No, I haven’t, because my focus is on helping him maintain consistency. I have reminded him previously that he must improve, but it is crucial for him to be consistent in his mindset and mentality. Ollie possesses a fantastic mentality and is always ready to play, train, learn and progress. His eagerness to work harder is an invaluable example for everyone.”
Emery’s words of encouragement will surely motivate Watkins to strive for success and regain his place in the England squad. With his unwavering determination and consistently strong performances, it is only a matter of time before he once again dons the Three Lions jersey.
