However, cautionary advice has been given by Stuart Robson on ESPN, dissuading Mourinho from pursuing Dier in January. Robson asserts that the defender, valued at £4m, is a liability due to his lack of speed and inability to quickly anticipate and respond to threats in high-level football today.
Robson provided further insight into Dier’s shortcomings, posing the question of whether a team requires a player with adept ball skills and the ability to distribute passes upfront, or a capable defender. In the case of the latter, Robson expresses skepticism towards Dier’s suitability, highlighting his sluggishness and lack of defensive awareness as concerns. Consequently, Robson admits to not being a fan of Dier’s current form.
While Dier’s lack of pace has left him exposed in the Premier League in recent times, it is conceivable that he may rediscover his best performance in Italy. Serie A is known for its slower pace compared to other leagues, exemplified by the goal-scoring records of players such as Edin Dzeko and Ciro Immobile over the past decade. This could potentially be an ideal environment for Dier to thrive in.
Given Dier’s past success under Mourinho’s guidance, bringing him to Roma as an attempt to reignite his career might not be the worst idea.
