Enzo Maresca remains optimistic about Yunus Akgun’s availability for the upcoming Championship match against Sunderland, despite the winger picking up an injury during Leicester City’s victory over Swansea. Akgun came on as a substitute in the 65th minute but had to be substituted himself in injury time, seemingly nursing a thigh injury. However, Maresca, after speaking with Akgun, believes it is not a significant concern.
Following the match, Maresca stated, “I spoke with him, and he doesn’t think it’s anything serious. It’s just a minor issue, so hopefully, he won’t miss any games or training sessions. We will have to wait and see.”
Nevertheless, Akgun faces a race against time to regain fitness for Tuesday’s game against Sunderland, as the turnaround is rather swift. Leicester City aims to secure their eighth consecutive league victory in this match, coming just one victory short of the club’s record.
In the event that Akgun is unavailable, Leicester City will face a shortage of wingers, with Kasey McAteer still recovering from a hamstring injury sustained a few weeks ago against Blackburn. Although McAteer has made progress in his rehabilitation and is now training on the field, he has not yet rejoined his teammates.
This situation leaves Stephy Mavididi, Abdul Fatawu, and Marc Albrighton as the remaining options on the wings. Given their impressive performances in the recent game against Swansea, Mavididi and Fatawu are likely to retain their places in the starting lineup. It is worth noting that Maresca has yet to grant Albrighton a starting opportunity in the Championship this season.
