Leicester City’s Yunus Akgun will be absent from the team’s upcoming Championship fixture against Sunderland as he is currently undergoing a scan to assess the severity of his injury.
During the club’s recent 3-1 victory over Swansea, the Turkish international winger hobbled off the field in stoppage time, appearing to struggle with a thigh issue. Despite initially believing the injury was not serious, manager Enzo Maresca has now sent Akgun for further evaluation.
Maresca provided an update on Akgun’s condition during a press conference, stating, “He’s currently undergoing a scan, so we should have some news soon. It seems unlikely that he will be available for tomorrow’s match. Hopefully, the injury is not severe and he will only need a few days to recover.”
With Akgun sidelined, Maresca will have to choose from a limited pool of three first-team wingers: Abdul Fatawu, Stephy Mavididi, and Marc Albrighton. However, there is some positive news as Kasey McAteer is nearing a return from his hamstring injury.
McAteer suffered the injury during a previous match against Blackburn, but Maresca anticipates that both McAteer and £7.5m summer signing Tom Cannon will be back in first-team training by the end of this week, or possibly the following week.
Aside from Akgun, Dennis Praet (back) and Callum Doyle (knee) are the other two players currently sidelined for Leicester City. Maresca confirmed that there are no fresh injury concerns ahead of their crucial game against Sunderland, as the team aims to secure an eighth consecutive Championship win.
