Last season, the Tottenham Hotspur academy graduate joined Sampdoria on a season-long loan after falling out of favor under former Spurs manager Antonio Conte. This summer, Winks opted to move to Leicester City, who are eager to make a swift return to the Premier League following their relegation last season, thus severing his ties with his childhood club.
Winks emphasized that his decision to pursue a loan spell at Sampdoria was not due to any discord with Tottenham. He explained that he joined the Italian side to secure regular first-team action and reignite his passion for the game. Additionally, the former Spurs player stated that he departed to face new challenges and to have a purpose to strive for.
In a podcast with Leicester’s The Place, Winks mentioned, “I made the decision to go to Sampdoria. It wasn’t a fall-out with the club. I wanted to play games and feel that love again for football and feel respected on the pitch. It was a difficult year, but a great year. I loved it. It’s the same with this year, I wanted to leave because I wanted to feel something, have a purpose. I wanted a challenge and to fight for something.”
Having amassed 203 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur and scoring five goals in the process, Winks is now focused on aiding Leicester in their campaign to return to the Premier League.
