Following a rough patch just before the international break that saw them lose two consecutive matches, Leicester City has been performing excellently in the Championship, which was somewhat expected given the strength of their team on paper.
Many of the experienced players from their disappointing 2022-23 Premier League campaign stayed with the team, including some who didn’t play much, if at all, in the previous season.
One of those players is Jannik Vestergaard, who didn’t see any action during the Premier League season under Brendan Rodgers, the caretaker duo of Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler, and then Dean Smith, despite making three cup appearances. However, he was given a new chance by Enzo Maresca when he became the head coach over the summer. Aside from a one-match suspension, Vestergaard has been a key part of the starting lineup for the table-topping City.
Teaming up with Wout Faes in defense, Vestergaard ranks among the top 20 players in the Championship on WhoScored ratings, indicating how comfortable he is in Maresca’s new system.
However, there is a possibility that the 31-year-old could leave the King Power Stadium in less than a year’s time.
Since joining Leicester from Southampton in August 2021, Vestergaard signed a three-year contract, but his lack of playing time under Brendan Rodgers and the uncertainty surrounding a contract extension could open the door for a potential transfer away from the club.
Despite his contract situation, Vestergaard remains content with the current situation and remains focused on his performances on the pitch. However, there is the potential of interest from elsewhere, as Anderlecht were previously linked with a late move for Vestergaard, and recent reports suggest that they could come knocking again, especially with the injury to their veteran defender Jan Vertonghen.
With his contract set to expire in 2024, Leicester may need to act quickly if they want to secure Vestergaard’s long-term future at the club, otherwise, they could be facing the possibility of him leaving in the near future.
