Barcelona set to face competition from Sevilla in free transfer pursuit of Leicester Playmaker

Journalist Xavier Munoz reported through Mundo Deportivo that Sevilla is now in the running to sign Barcelona’s midfield target, Wilfred Ndidi. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, Sevilla has made him their top priority.

In October and November, rumors linking Ndidi to Barcelona began to swirl as his contract approached its end. At 26, his strong performances in the English Second Division caught the attention of other clubs, and Sevilla has recently joined the race.

Barcelona initially planned to wait until the end of the season to pursue Ndidi, but Gavi’s season-ending injury has forced them to reconsider their January transfer market strategies.

Finding a potential replacement for Gavi will be a significant challenge in the near future. While Barcelona has a shortlist of players, they may also consider options within their youth team to cover for Gavi and seek a pivot midfielder in the summer, with Ndidi as a potential option.

Sevilla, however, has made Ndidi their top priority for the summer of 2024. Discussions are ongoing between the player’s representatives and Victor Orta, Sevilla’s sporting director.

Ndidi, who can also shift to a center-back role, has been delivering impressive performances in the final year of his contract with Leicester, including three goals and four assists.

With a current value of €18 million, his impending free agency makes it likely that any team looking to acquire his services in January will have the opportunity to do so at a reasonable cost.

As a player with his prime years ahead of him and significant Premier League experience, Ndidi is sure to attract interest. Whether Barcelona will make a move for him in 2024 is still uncertain.
