Despite finishing just one place and two points behind Everton in the table, Leicester City suffered relegation to the Championship. This struggle followed a summer where transfer funds were restricted for then-manager Brendan Rodgers.
During the 2022 summer transfer window, the club made only one outfield signing with Wout Faes joining as a replacement for the outgoing Wesley Fofana. Club chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha explained that these measures were necessary to ensure compliance with ‘sustainability regulations’.
Piper expressed pride in the club’s decision to adhere to the rules despite the potential consequences. He acknowledged that while Everton’s punishment may seem harsh, it was necessary. Piper also criticized the “deceit” that occurs in the Premier League, citing Leicester’s falling out with Rodgers when he asked for more players.
In the end, Piper acknowledged that the club’s commitment to playing by the rules, while admirable, ultimately came at a cost. He stated, “10 points seems harsh when you see what is happening with other clubs, but they needed a sanction. But football-wise, we weren’t good enough last season”.
