Girona has caused a major upset in La Liga, taking the top spot in the table after their stunning victory over Barcelona at the Nou Camp. Daley Blind, a former Manchester United player, has been a key part of this unexpected rise, adding to his collection of titles as he helps Girona chase their fairytale ending. Blind, 33, left Old Trafford in 2018 and went on to win titles with Ajax and Bayern Munich before joining Girona earlier this year, a sister club of Premier League champions Manchester City. Despite their modest spending and humble facilities, Girona’s recent victory has propelled them to the top of La Liga, shocking traditional giants like Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, and Athletic Bilbao. The club is majority-owned by the City Football Group, which has connections with 12 other clubs worldwide. Blind sees the comparisons to Leicester’s historic triumph as valid, confident that Girona can achieve European football success despite not being considered a “top club”.
