David Moyes had initially secured Downes from Swansea City for approximately £14 million in the summer of 2022. Speculating on the situation, he remarked, “I actually think it’s looking positive for Saints in terms of signing him.” Jones assessed the match of Downes’ evolving performance and potential fit at Southampton, while contemplating West Ham’s evaluation of his role within their setup.
Given the circumstances, a permanent move to St Mary’s emerges as the most favorable option for Downes and West Ham. While Downes presents an attractive prospect for Southampton, the prospect of securing a substantial transfer fee from his sale—potentially exceeding £8-10 million—seems to make the decision to part ways with him unequivocal for the Hammers.
