Rio Ferdinand has thrown his weight behind Chelsea’s potential re-signing of Dominic Solanke, more than six years after his initial departure from the club. The former footballer turned pundit has also urged the Blues’ leadership to cease any discussions with Tottenham regarding a prospective deal for Conor Gallagher.
Solanke embarked on his professional journey at Chelsea following a decade in the club’s academy at Stamford Bridge. Although he excelled as a goalscorer during his time in the youth setup, he was scarcely afforded opportunities within the first team.
Following an unsuccessful stint at Liverpool, he has discovered his niche at Bournemouth and is demonstrating his capacity to find the net in the Premier League. This season has been particularly prolific for him, with 12 goals in 18 appearances, marking his best campaign in terms of goal scoring in the top flight.
With Chelsea actively seeking a striker, either in January or the summer, Ferdinand believes that securing Solanke’s services would be a logical move. The esteemed Manchester United icon remarked on BT Sport, “A centre-forward would be great. Solanke was a childhood prodigy here, breaking all the records in Chelsea’s academy. He knows his way around this place; it would be a sort of homecoming for him. His name stands out at the moment.”
Gallagher, another product of Chelsea’s academy, has progressed to become a regular first-team player. Nevertheless, he continues to be linked with a transfer away from the club, given that his contract expires in 2025.
In an effort to align with Financial Fair Play regulations, Chelsea are inclined to sell Gallagher, a move that would assist in maintaining fiscal prudence. Spurs have reportedly entered advanced negotiations to secure the services of the 23-year-old, but Ferdinand is resolute in his stance that Gallagher should remain in west London.
Ferdinand articulated, “I can understand why the transfer is being considered, but once again, there have been numerous players over the years whose abilities might be middling within the squad, but their contribution in terms of character, influence within the dressing room, and the standards they set are immeasurable.”
