Football Insider has discovered that West Ham currently has an outstanding debt of £171 million to other clubs in the form of transfer instalments. The club’s 2022/23 accounts, released on December 29th, reveal an annual revenue of £237 million with a net loss of £18.3 million. Despite this loss, West Ham ranks seventh in the Premier League in terms of total income, with only the ‘Big Six’ clubs earning more. The club’s accounts also show a significant transfer debt of £171 million as of May 31, 2023, due in part to their heavy spending in recent transfer windows. This included a record-breaking £183.9 million investment in the men’s first team, with nine new players brought in at high costs likely to be spread over the course of their contracts. Despite this, West Ham’s financial situation received a boost with the £105 million fee paid by Arsenal for Declan Rice, helping to cover a large portion of their transfer debt. As the January transfer window opens, the club’s senior figures may be cautious about adding to their debt, but the substantial income from Rice’s transfer will provide a significant boost to the club’s finances and transfer budget.
