Following the premature end of his loan spell at Manchester United, Sergio Reguilon has returned to Tottenham. However, his stay in north London may be brief as reports suggest another potential departure from the club beckons this month.
According to Fabrizio Romano speaking on Kick, Borussia Dortmund has emerged as a suitor for Reguilon, although he is not their primary target. Romano indicated that Dortmund’s top priority for the left-back position is currently Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, with Reguilon labeled as one of the names on their list.
Despite featuring in Dortmund’s wishlist, Maatsen appears to hold precedence over Reguilon. Romano elaborated on the situation, stating, “So, one of the names included in their list is Sergio Reguilon, he is one of the names on their list, but the priority target is Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, Dortmund want Ian Maatsen, he is a concrete target…Chelsea have a clear issue with the loan spots, they need to make room for these players to leave, it can’t just be loan, loan, loan, there is a rule and Chelsea have to respect that.”
With Dortmund actively seeking a new left-back, both Reguilon and Maatsen are perceived as strong candidates for the role. Despite Reguilon’s recent dip in form, his attributes, including his pace, intensity, and crossing ability, are seen as well-suited for the pace of German football.
Meanwhile, Maatsen, a highly promising young talent, showcased his abilities at Burnley last season, making a potential move to Germany an attractive prospect for his continued development.
While Maatsen currently holds the edge as Dortmund’s primary target, the situation could shift if Chelsea opt to retain him, leading to the possibility of the German club turning their attention towards Reguilon.
