Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham Hotspur are aiming high for the January transfer window, as they have a list of targets in mind, including a defender, a midfielder, and a forward. However, to make room for new additions, it’s clear that Spurs will need to offload players.
The departure of Hugo Lloris from the wage bill earlier this month signals a new era for the club. Nonetheless, there are still lingering figures from the past, one of whom is Eric Dier, who finds himself on the periphery.
It’s no secret at this stage that Tottenham would prefer Dier to depart, as he simply doesn’t align with Postecoglou’s plans. Nonetheless, this doesn’t discount Dier’s value as a center-back capable of contributing immensely to a top-tier team.
Journalist Alex Crook has shared that Dier has been presented to Premier League clubs in the past. In a conversation on talkSPORT, Crook indicated, “I think there is interest. David Moyes is certainly looking to strengthen that backline.” He also mentioned that Dier’s former club, Sporting Lisbon, has expressed interest, and proposed, “It wouldn’t surprise me if Eric Dier just sits out his contract and moves probably abroad on a free transfer at the end of the season.”
Even if Tottenham secures Radu Dragusin, a player they are heavily linked with this month, they are likely to still lack depth. Moreover, if Dier, with his £85k-a-week wages, is open to serving as a backup for Tottenham beyond the January transfer window, that could indeed be viewed as a positive.
While it’s true that few Premier League sides can boast a player of Dier’s caliber as their fourth or fifth choice, Spurs may view such depth as unnecessary, particularly as they pursue a £50 million Premier League striker.
