Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Tottenham, is reportedly eyeing a move for Kalvin Phillips, as the club’s pursuit of a defensive midfielder intensifies. The interest in Phillips is shared with Newcastle United, while rumors suggest that Wolves’ Joao Gomes is also on Tottenham’s radar.
Despite already making significant signings in the form of Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner, Tottenham is not done yet. With just over two weeks remaining in the January transfer window, reports indicate that the club is actively pursuing a defensive midfielder to bolster their squad.
According to the Northern Echo, senior figures at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium are pushing for a move for Phillips, with the club expressing their interest to Manchester City. Phillips, who has struggled for regular game time at City, is also linked with Newcastle, but financial constraints may hinder a move for him this winter.
City is reportedly demanding £7 million for a loan deal for Phillips, with an obligation to buy at the end of the season. Meanwhile, Tottenham’s pursuit of a defensive midfielder has also put Wolves’ Joao Gomes in their sights, with reports suggesting that a substantial offer could be in the works.
Gomes, a key figure in Wolves’ midfield, is valued at around £30 million and has attracted interest from Tottenham as they seek to strengthen their squad. While Tottenham had previously been linked with Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, securing his services mid-season may prove challenging.
With almost two weeks until their next competitive match, Tottenham has time to potentially make further signings before they face Manchester City in the FA Cup on January 26.
