Timo Werner’s departure from RB Leipzig is being felt as a significant loss after the surprise move to Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window. His debut with Spurs in the 2-2 draw against Manchester United demonstrated that the struggles he faced at Stamford Bridge still persist.
The match saw Werner miss multiple crucial chances, including a wild effort and a squandered opportunity after racing past Diogo Dalot. As always with Werner, there are moments of brilliance mixed with moments of frustration.
Despite his inconsistent performance, the Germany international managed to assist, setting up Rodrigo Bentancur’s goal. Leipzig coach Ange Postecoglou praised Werner’s “really exciting” display in his first game with Tottenham.
While Werner had struggled for starts before leaving RB Leipzig, his former teammate David Raum emphasized the positive impact he had on and off the pitch, leaving a noticeable gap in Marco Rose’s squad.
Raum expressed, “He hasn’t had an easy season. He also had his injuries last season, which of course also comes into play. But he still helped us brutally again and again. The whole team got along well with Werner. He was there for everyone, looked after everyone and put everyone in a good mood. That’s why it’s a big loss for the dressing room.”
However, Raum also wished Werner the best in his new endeavor with Tottenham, acknowledging that a return to the Premier League may be what he needs to rediscover his form.
Tottenham has the option to sign Werner permanently for £15 million this summer, and they have also made other notable acquisitions, including Radu Dragusin and Antonio Nusa, as they continue to strengthen their squad.
