William Gallas has expressed that Conor Gallagher’s presence may be hindering Chelsea’s attacking style as he is linked to Tottenham Hotspur. Gallagher’s rollercoaster season has seen him go from nearly leaving the club to being given the captain’s armband shortly after. Despite this, there are new reports suggesting that Gallagher could be sold in order to free up Financial Fair Play space.
As a product of Chelsea’s academy, the 23-year-old’s departure would benefit the club financially due to contract amortization. Chelsea has been able to finance big transfers in recent years by selling off talent developed at their academy. Since 2014, only four other clubs have made more money from selling academy players than Chelsea. With Mason Mount already sold in the summer, it’s possible that Gallagher could be next.
Former player Gallas, who has also played for Arsenal and Tottenham, believes that Chelsea fans shouldn’t be too worried if Gallagher does leave. Gallas suggests that Gallagher’s playing style may slow down Chelsea’s attacking play and that the team might need to consider changing their system to accommodate another player. He also noted that Gallagher’s speed and pressing ability are strong, but his quality and technique when in possession of the ball may not be at the level required for Chelsea’s style of play.
