Tottenham is preparing a surprise last-minute bid to snatch Conor Gallagher from Chelsea before the January transfer window closes, according to sources familiar with the situation.
After failing to secure a deal for Kalvin Phillips from Man City and struggling to bring in a midfielder as desired by manager Ange Postecoglou, Spurs are now set to reignite their interest in the 23-year-old Gallagher, as per sources close to Football Insider.
Initial reports from January 19 suggested that a potential move for Gallagher had fallen through, but Tottenham is expected to make a new bid following Phillips’ loan confirmation to West Ham on January 26.
Despite their eagerness to sign Phillips, the financial demands from Man City proved to be too costly for Tottenham. They have long been admirers of Gallagher and have had talks with Chelsea, but the asking price of £80million for the player, who has 18 months left on his contract, has been a sticking point.
Gallagher, who has been a key player for Mauricio Pochettino’s team this season, has accumulated six assists in 27 appearances across all competitions.
Tottenham is in need of a new central midfielder and is hopeful of making further signings in January, including Club Brugge wonderkid Antonio Nusa, in addition to the permanent signing of Radu Dragusin and the loan acquisition of Timo Werner.
After a 2-2 draw against Man United, Tottenham currently sits in fifth place in the Premier League and is set to face Man City in the FA Cup fourth round.
