Maresca expressed his frustration, particularly regarding a disallowed goal scored by Patson Daka and denied penalty claims in previous games. He criticized the system, bringing into question why a referee who made a significant mistake is allowed to officiate a top-flight game only a few days later. His critique also focused on the difficulties faced by Premier League referees when transitioning to Championship games without VAR in place. He believes that not having VAR could influence their ability to make accurate decisions.
Not only did Maresca raise concerns about the system’s inconsistency and the impact on his team, but he vehemently expressed his confusion over how the system functions in relation to referees moving between leagues and the criteria for VAR availability. He highlighted how these inconsistencies have led to negative outcomes for his team, notably citing the disallowed goal by Patson Daka during their match against Leeds and the lack of penalty calls in previous games.
This vocal concern was demonstrated during a recent press conference where Maresca expressed his frustration, stating, “It happened at Ipswich away when there should have been a penalty when we were 1-0 up. It happened at Coventry away when there was a handball inside the box but no penalty. In the second half, there should have been a second yellow card, but there was no booking. Those are crucial moments. The other day, the goal I feel was quite normal and then it’s 2-0 away. They are crucial moments where the referees cost us points.”
