Djed Spence reacts when asked about Evangelos Marinakis’s big decision at Nottingham Forest

Djed Spence’s journey in professional football has been a rollercoaster ride, filled with ups and downs at various clubs. After struggling to make an impact at Middlesbrough, Tottenham Hotspur, and Leeds United, he found his footing at Nottingham Forest where he experienced considerable success.

Currently on loan at Genoa from Tottenham Hotspur, Spence has shown his potential in Serie A since his move in the January transfer window. The right-back has demonstrated his skills and adaptability in a new league, with Genoa having the option to make his deal permanent in the summer of 2023.

Spence spent the initial part of the season on loan at Leeds United, but due to a break clause in his agreement, he was sent back to Spurs. Despite the setbacks, the youngster attributes his best career spell to his time at Nottingham Forest under the guidance of Steve Cooper.

Reflecting on his time at Forest, Spence praised Cooper for his ability to understand and bring out the best in him as both a player and an individual. The atmosphere created by Cooper allowed Spence to play with confidence and joy, leading to one of the most fulfilling moments in his career.

The decision by Forest to part ways with Cooper in December and appoint Nuno as the new manager came as a surprise, but Spence acknowledges the nature of football where managerial changes are common. He remains grateful for the role Cooper played in his development and success at the club.

During the 2021-22 season, Spence was a standout player for Forest, contributing significantly to their promotion from the Championship to the Premier League. His performances, with 41 starts and one substitute appearance, including two goals and four assists, were crucial in the Reds’ success.

Looking back, one cannot help but wonder what might have transpired if Forest, Middlesbrough, and Spence had made the loan deal permanent in the summer of 2022. However, the experiences and growth gained from his time at Nottingham Forest have undoubtedly shaped Spence’s career and left a lasting impact on his football journey.
