Everton Football Club is deeply saddened by the passing of former player Jimmy Husband, a beloved member of the 1969/70 League Championship-winning team. Jimmy, who was 76 years old, peacefully passed away on Saturday following a short illness.
Born in Newcastle on October 15, 1947, Jimmy’s football journey began when he joined Everton in 1963, at a time when the club was reigning League Champions. His talent shone through as he went on to score an impressive 55 goals in 199 first-team appearances for the Blues.
Despite being a sought-after young footballer with offers from over a dozen clubs, including the likes of Aston Villa, Leeds United, and Sunderland, Jimmy made the decision to turn professional with Everton. He quickly made his mark, making his debut for the club away at Fulham on Easter Monday in April 1965.
During his time at Everton, Jimmy had the privilege of playing alongside legends such as Gordon West, Brian Labone, and Jimmy Gabriel, among others. He was a crucial part of the team’s success, contributing to their FA Youth Cup win in 1965 and later playing key roles in the FA Cup final and another First Division crown.
Despite narrowly missing out on a full cap for England due to the tactical decisions of Sir Alf Ramsey, Jimmy’s skills and dedication to the game were evident throughout his career. His journey continued with Luton Town before he ventured across the Atlantic to play for Memphis Rogues and the Cleveland Force.
Following his playing days, Jimmy settled in Bedfordshire, where he ran a pub and remained connected to the Everton community. He was a familiar face at the Everton Former Players Foundation Christmas Lunch and was honored as a special guest at Goodison in 2020.
