David Sullivan must seriously reconsider a controversial choice he has made regarding West Ham.
Reports from The Daily Mail on March 12 revealed that the Hammers, along with nine other Premier League clubs, have blocked a significant financial package for the English Football League totaling £900 million. This decision has sparked outrage and disappointment among many stakeholders.
It is ironic that six of the clubs involved have previously competed in the Championship and are not guaranteed long-term stability in the top flight, including West Ham. Last season, we faced the threat of relegation throughout the campaign, highlighting our own vulnerability.
Criticism has been directed at the board, especially after claims from Charlie Methven, co-owner of Charlton Athletic, suggesting that West Ham is at the forefront of obstructing the deal alongside Crystal Palace.
While Charlton later apologized for Methven’s remarks to West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady, the message was clear. As privileged members of the Premier League, we have a responsibility to support the entire football pyramid, not just our own interests.
The current situation reflects poorly on the club and its stakeholders, and it is essential to prioritize the well-being of English football as a whole. Greed and selfishness in the top flight must be replaced with a collective effort to strengthen and sustain the league for all 92 clubs involved.
This decision cannot stand. It does not align with the values we hold as a club or as fans. It is crucial that we reassess our position on this matter to ensure the future of football in our country.
