West Ham now has a clear path to sign £20m star Jack Clarke after Sunderland’s final attempt to secure him with a new deal fell through. The Hammers were eager for a new attacker in January and had their sights set on Clarke, Jota, and Ibrahim Osman. Despite the potential departures of Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals, only central midfielder Kalvin Phillips was brought in on loan.
Sunderland’s delay in selling Clarke to West Ham during their push for the play-offs, as well as their desire to extend his contract, thwarted any potential move. But now, with Sunderland refusing to break their wage structure, Clarke will not sign a new deal, leaving West Ham and other interested parties on high alert for the upcoming transfer window.
At 23 years old with immense potential, Clarke fits perfectly into West Ham’s recruitment strategy. Not only does he provide cover in multiple attacking positions, but he also fulfills the criteria as a homegrown player. With the looming possibility of Lucas Paqueta’s departure, Clarke could prove to be an invaluable addition to the squad, particularly as a left wingback where the Hammers are lacking in depth.
