Former Leeds United and Leicester City striker, Brian Deane, believes that the Foxes no longer have a guaranteed spot for Championship promotion. According to the 56-year-old, there are now four clubs in the mix for promotion, with Leeds and City currently holding the automatic spots, closely followed by Ipswich Town and Southampton.
At the start of 2024, the Foxes had a comfortable ten-point lead over second place and a 13-point cushion over the play-off pack. However, a recent dip in form, with only four points earned from the last 15 available, has caused the situation at the top of the table to become much tighter.
Leeds now lead the pack, although they have played one more game than Ipswich, who are just one point behind. Southampton, with a game in hand over City, could close the gap to six points with nine matches remaining.
Former striker Deane is feeling confident about Leeds’ chances. He expressed his surprise at their impressive run of results and praised their performance. Deane, who also played for Leicester, had originally considered the Foxes as potential champions at the start of the year, but Leeds’ resurgence has caught his attention.
Deane, who had successful spells at both Leeds and Leicester, is backing Leeds for promotion. He noted that there are realistically four teams in contention for promotion this season.
Leicester City, managed by Enzo Maresca, will face Bristol City and Norwich over the Easter weekend. Meanwhile, Leeds will travel to Watford before hosting Hull at home.
