On Good Friday, Leeds United got off to an impressive start by observing their Championship promotion rival Leicester City fall 1-0 to Bristol City. Leicester had the opportunity to regain the top spot in the standings from Leeds after the international break in March. Enzo Maresca’s team had been struggling, but the break was seen as a chance to regroup for the final stretch of the season.
However, Leicester’s poor performance led to a well-deserved defeat at the hands of Bristol, who moved up to 12th place with the win. Anis Mehmeti scored the lone goal of the match in the 73rd minute, following numerous missed opportunities by Jamie Vardy for Leicester.
Despite the numerous scoring opportunities, Leicester failed to capitalize and were lucky to enter halftime with a 0-0 draw, as Bristol had a denied penalty claim. There was also controversy surrounding a potential red card for Wout Faes after his challenge on Tommy Conway.
While Leicester dominated possession in the second half, they were unable to convert their chances, with Vardy being particularly wasteful. Despite Mehmeti’s goal, Leicester couldn’t build any momentum and suffered their fourth loss in six games.
After the match, Maresca expressed optimism about their chances of automatic promotion despite the setback. However, the defeat means Leicester could drop out of the top two in the Championship standings for the first time since September. A win for Ipswich Town against Blackburn could see them leapfrog Leicester for first place, while Leeds could reclaim the top spot with a victory over Watford.
