Everton’s financial woes reach epic proportions as losses skyrocket and ‘going concern’ status becomes imminent

The future of Everton Football Club is shrouded in uncertainty, with concerns looming over their financial stability should they face relegation. The latest financial figures paint a bleak picture, showing a staggering loss of over £89m in the past year and a cumulative deficit of around £500m over the last five years. Efforts to improve the club’s financial position have seen the playing squad weakened and high-profile players sold, but breaches of profit and sustainability regulations have led to point deductions and ongoing scrutiny.

The decision to suspend partnerships with Russia-linked companies following the invasion of Ukraine has also had a significant impact, costing the club around £20m in sponsorship deals. With turnover decreasing and the wage to turnover ratio rising to 92%, Everton’s financial vulnerability is heightened, exacerbated by a rise in club debt to over £330m.

Despite progress on the new waterfront stadium and significant investment from 777 Partners, the club’s financial stability remains precarious. With a winless streak in the Premier League and the looming threat of relegation, Everton’s ability to meet its obligations is in serious doubt, adding even more uncertainty to their already distressed financial state.
