Leeds United suffers crushing promotion setback as main competitors revel in dramatic victories post Leicester City loss

Monday saw another thrilling day in the Championship promotion race, culminating in Ipswich Town’s late heroics against Southampton to take back the top spot in the league standings. The drama continued as Jeremy Sarmiento secured a dramatic win for Ipswich in added time, further denting Leeds United’s hopes for promotion.

In a rollercoaster of a game at Portman Road, Ipswich clinched victory in the dying moments after Southampton were reduced to 10 men. Russell Martin’s side may now have to reassess their promotion ambitions after the defeat, but Ipswich’s resilience and determination have once again put them at the summit of the Championship.

Former Leeds prospect Leif Davis opened the scoring for Ipswich early on, only for Southampton to swiftly equalize through Che Adams. The away side then took the lead, but Ipswich fought back with a goal from substitute Nathan Broadhead before Sarmiento’s late winner.

Elsewhere, Leicester City staged a comeback win against Norwich to reclaim first place in the league, adding further excitement to a day filled with surprises and twists in the Championship promotion race.
