Celtic has condemned the “unacceptable” incidents that occurred during their match against Rangers, where John Kennedy was reportedly hit with objects from the stands at Ibrox.
In a thrilling Scottish Premiership showdown, Rangers managed to salvage a 3-3 draw against their rivals with an injury-time goal from Rabbi Matondo. However, tensions rose when Cyriel Dessers’ goal was disallowed, sparking chaos in the stadium.
Referee John Beaton made the controversial decision to overturn the goal after reviewing a tackle by Tomoki Iwata. Sky Sports cameras captured police speaking with the Celtic assistant manager as objects, believed to be coins, were thrown towards the Celtic dugout. Commentator Ian Crocker described the situation as “sadly, there are objects being thrown into the Celtic dugout.”
In response, Celtic revealed that they will raise their concerns with Rangers and confirmed that Police Scotland are investigating the matter. This incident echoes a previous incident where a Rangers fan was jailed for throwing a bottle at a Celtic physiotherapist during another Old Firm game, leaving the victim scarred for life. Celtic stated that it is unacceptable for their staff to be targeted in such a way and are determined to address the issue.
