Graeme Souness has accused Chris Sutton of attempting to sway VAR with his ‘biased’ commentary during the intense 3-3 draw between Rangers and Celtic over the weekend. Celtic was left fuming after an incident early in the second half where Fabio Silva was initially booked for diving, only for the decision to be overturned and a penalty awarded following a review by referee John Beaton and VAR Nick Walsh. Despite James Tavernier converting the spot-kick to spark a Rangers comeback, Sutton was adamant that Silva had dived.
Souness agreed that Silva was a diver but suggested that Sutton’s commentary could have been an attempt to influence the VAR decision during the lengthy check. He expressed his disbelief at Sutton’s bias towards Rangers, despite having had a positive interaction with him at a charity event recently. Souness questioned whether VAR in Scotland listened to the commentary, as Sutton’s strong opinions seemed aimed at influencing the decision-makers.
