Fabio Silva initially appeared to have taken a dive in the Celtic penalty area after tripping over Alistair Johnston’s leg. However, upon VAR review, referee John Beaton reversed his call and awarded Rangers a penalty kick.
This decision sparked frustration from Chris Sutton, a former Celtic player, who labeled Beaton’s choice as ’embarrassing.’ The penalty was successfully converted, leading Rangers to mount a comeback after a first half dominated by Celtic.
While the match ultimately ended in a draw, the focus remained on VAR’s intrusive role in the game. Former SFA Grade 1 referee, Steve Conroy, expressed his disagreement with the penalty call, stating that VAR should not have intervened in Beaton’s initial decision.
Despite this setback, Celtic still maintains a one-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership. The title race remains tight with six games left, and with one more Glasgow Derby on the horizon, Brendan Rodgers’ team still has a chance to secure victory.
