Celtic have requested clarification from the Scottish FA regarding the VAR incident that led to Rangers being awarded a penalty in the Old Firm derby. They believe that referee John Beaton was not shown a crucial angle of the controversial incident involving Alistair Johnston and Fabio Silva.
In the second half, with Celtic leading 2-0, Silva fell in the box after a tackle by Johnston. Beaton initially dismissed penalty claims and cautioned Silva for simulation. However, after a VAR review, Beaton reversed his decision, awarding Rangers a penalty that Tavernier scored.
Celtic argues that Beaton did not see footage showing Johnston touching the ball before contacting Silva. They believe the challenge did not meet the criteria for being ‘careless, reckless, or excessive’. The club has written to the Scottish FA expressing their concerns about the VAR process.
A spokesperson stated: “We have been in contact with the Scottish FA about VAR all season and have participated in efforts to improve standards. We have raised additional concerns regarding the VAR incident and are awaiting a response.”
