Panic and concern spread through the crowd during Celtic’s 3-0 victory over St Mirren as James Forrest entered the game as an 80th minute replacement for Nicolas Kuhn.
The chaos began in the 71st minute when Brendan Rodgers made a rare quadruple substitution, adding to the confusion stirred up by Stephen Welsh replacing Maik Nawrocki in the 62nd minute.
Amidst the confusion, fans rushed towards the dug-out, warning against a potential sixth substitute and the repercussions of playing an ineligible player.
Although the Celtic replacements showed no signs of a head injury, the situation was clarified by St Mirren’s own substitutions.
Early in the first half, Yang Hyun-jun and Elvis Bwonono collided, resulting in Bwonono leaving the field due to a concussion substitution nominated by Stephen Robinson.
St Mirren opted to use the concussion substitution for Bwonono, bringing on Barry Strain, while still retaining the option of five normal substitutions.
Celtic also benefited from a sixth substitute, with Forrest contributing to the third goal scored by Adam Idah, following goals from Reo Hatate and Kyogo Furuhashi.
