Barry Douglas, the former Leeds United defender, has shared a heartfelt farewell message following the news of his departure from Lech Poznan in Poland.
After leaving Leeds in 2021, Douglas returned to Lech Poznan for a second stint in his career. During his time at Elland Road, where he spent three years – with one being on loan at Blackburn Rovers – Douglas became the first permanent signing under Marcelo Bielsa in a £3million deal from Wolves. Despite his successful tenure at Leeds that included a promotion, Douglas found his way back to Lech Poznan, where he felt the strongest connection.
Now, after three years with Lech Poznan, it has been confirmed that the 34-year-old defender will be leaving the club when his contract expires this summer. Having previously been in Poland between 2013 and 2016, Douglas bid an emotional farewell this week to the team and fans he had grown close to.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Douglas expressed his gratitude and emotions, saying, “The past 3 years have been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride in my two spells at Lech Poznan. To leave the club having won 2 championships and a super cup I feel so much pride knowing I will always be in the club’s history.”
Despite the disappointing end to this season, Douglas reflected on the positive memories and connections he made during his time at Lech Poznan. He thanked everyone at the club for their support and kindness, expressing his hope that Lech Poznan will continue to succeed in future seasons.
Barry Douglas leaves Lech Poznan with three major titles to his name, including two Ekstraklasa championships and a Polish Super Cup. His successful career also includes winning the Championship title with Wolves and Leeds and the Turkish Cup with Konyaspor in 2017.
