Peter Grant has proposed that Celtic consider making a move for David de Gea.
The Spanish goalkeeper has been away from the game for a year since leaving Manchester United and has not signed with any club for the 2023/24 season. Despite training with a non-league team in England to stay sharp, he is actively seeking a new club this summer.
With Joe Hart retiring, Brendan Rodgers is in need of a new number one keeper. Scott Bain is currently second choice and Benjamin Siegrist is struggling for playing time. Grant acknowledges that other clubs may offer De Gea more money, but believes the allure of Champions League football and the opportunity to win trophies at Celtic could be tempting enough.
Grant suggested in an interview with GO Radio, “I think David de Gea could be a great fit for Celtic. He’s been training in non-league football in England and I believe a move to a club like Celtic, with European football, could be really exciting for him.”
While acknowledging the financial aspect, Grant emphasized the potential for big matches at Celtic Park and the thrill of playing in the Champions League as incentives for De Gea to consider a move to Scotland.
He added, “It may require a significant investment, but if De Gea is looking to return to top-level football and wants to experience big European nights, Celtic could be a great option for him. He’s the kind of player who could fill the void left by Joe Hart.”
