The sale of Viktor Gyokeres from Coventry City to Sporting CP a year ago is still vivid in the minds of fans, with the striker’s impact in the Championship and subsequent rise in his career highlighting the benefits of the transfer deal.
When the transfer agreement was initially made with Brighton and Hove Albion in July 2021, there were doubts surrounding Gyokeres’ ability to succeed after a lackluster six-month loan spell with just three goals at Coventry. Similarly, his struggles at Swansea City earlier in the year with no Championship goals in 11 appearances added to the skepticism.

The Portuguese club’s investment proved to be smart as Gyokeres excelled, scoring 43 goals and helping Sporting win the Liga Portugal title.
With interest from top clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea, Gyokeres’ value skyrocketed, with an £86 million release clause in his contract. Coventry stands to gain £6.5 million from any future sale thanks to a profit-sharing agreement, although Gyokeres is set to remain at Sporting for the upcoming season.
This decision will impact Coventry’s financial plans and aspirations of promotion, as the cash windfall would have been a significant boost. Nonetheless, with upcoming talent like Ellis Simms, Haji Wright, and Jack Rudoni, Coventry remains confident in their pursuit of promotion, even without the expected funds from Gyokeres’ sale.
