Leeds United have strengthened their goalkeeping squad by securing Alex Cairns on a permanent deal from Salford City. The 31-year-old Doncaster native has returned to the Whites for a modest sum and will serve as the team’s third-choice goalkeeper behind Illan Meslier and Karl Darlow.
Cairns, who has signed a two-year contract, replaces Kristoffer Klaesson, who recently departed for Rakow Częstochowa. Having previously been part of Leeds’ academy, Cairns has a deep connection to the club, making his senior debut before being released in 2015.
With over 300 league appearances to his name, Cairns brings a wealth of experience to the team. He featured prominently for Salford last season, playing in every league match and helping them finish in 20th place in League Two. Cairns also played a key role in a penalty shoot-out victory against his childhood team in the Carabao Cup.
Furthermore, Cairns qualifies as a homegrown player, satisfying English Football League regulations. His presence ensures that Leeds meet the requirements for naming a certain number of homegrown and club-developed players in their squad.
As the second summer signing for the club, Cairns’ return promises to reinforce Leeds United’s goalkeeping options and provide valuable depth to the team.
