Football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes that Leeds United should make the expansion of Elland Road a top priority in order to consistently boost revenue. With the stadium now under club ownership following confirmation earlier this month, owners 49ers Enterprises are eager to invest in improving the facilities within the historic ground.
Recent years have seen demand for tickets far surpassing supply, with Elland Road consistently selling out and loyal supporters being unable to attend. A larger stadium would not only please fans but also significantly increase income. Maguire is confident that Leeds has the potential to bring in tens of millions more by expanding their stadium.
“Elland Road currently ranks 10th in matchday revenue in England,” Maguire stated on The Price of Football podcast. “Considering the club’s popularity, Leeds should be higher on that list. With the new owners exploring all possibilities, I see no reason why a stadium of 50k-55k capacity shouldn’t be feasible. Manchester United brings in £136m from matchday revenue, and while Leeds won’t reach those numbers immediately, they can certainly aim higher.”
The expansion of Elland Road has been a major topic of discussion since 49ers Enterprises took control of the club, with fans eager for improvements. Chairman Paraag Marathe has emphasized plans for investment to enhance the stadium, including improvements to bathrooms, concourses, and lounges. Marathe has also clarified that progress on these enhancements will not be dependent on the club’s promotion to the Premier League, as initial work is already underway regardless of the league.
