Coventry City receive astronomical payment from Sporting Lisbon after Gyokeres clause triggered – you won’t believe how much they got!

Coventry City’s sell-on clause for Viktor Gyokeres has recently undergone adjustments as a result of Sporting Lisbon’s successful payment of €1m (£843,500) to the Championship club, in addition to the player achieving specific objectives over the course of the season. Originally, Coventry was entitled to 15% of any profit on Gyokeres’ initial fee when he was transferred to Sporting last summer. However, this percentage has now been reduced to 10% following the player’s exceptional performance for the Portuguese side.

Gyokeres, the 26-year-old striker, has been in prolific form, scoring an impressive total of 43 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions, leading Sporting to clinch the Portuguese title. This remarkable achievement has not only solidified Gyokeres’ reputation as one of Europe’s hottest goal scorers but has also garnered attention from top clubs, with Arsenal and Chelsea among those regularly linked with the player who possesses a €100m (£84m) release clause.

Should Gyokeres be sold for his full release clause amount, Coventry City stands to benefit significantly, as they would receive 10% of the profit above the initial fee, potentially amounting to £6.4m. The negotiations between Coventry and Sporting were finalized after the Portuguese club not only paid the additional €1m but also exercised their option, thereby reducing Coventry’s rights by 5%.

Although the sell-on clause underwent changes, Gyokeres’ future remains bright, with reports indicating that the forward continues to attract interest from other clubs. Sporting’s official statement regarding the adjustments emphasized their compliance with regulations and highlighted the contractual changes that led to the reduction in Coventry’s percentage share of Gyokeres’ future transfer profits. Despite the modifications, Gyokeres’ value as a top talent remains undeniable, as he remains a coveted asset in the football market.
