Ipswich Town have intensified their interest in signing Jack Clarke from Sunderland by submitting a formal bid for the 23-year-old winger according to a report in The Times on Wednesday.
Despite being pursued by several clubs throughout the summer, Ipswich’s move for Clarke stands out as they are the first to make an official approach to test Sunderland’s determination. The newly-promoted side is demonstrating significant ambition in the transfer market this summer, also nearing a deal for Chelsea’s Armando Broja, with a potential cost of around £30 million if they avoid relegation.
While Ipswich’s bid for Clarke is rumored to start at around £15 million with additional clauses, it may not meet Sunderland’s asking price. Nonetheless, it showcases a strong desire from Kieran McKenna’s team. Clarke is content at Sunderland and unlikely to seek a transfer, but without a new contract in place, the Black Cats may have to consider a substantial offer. The opportunity to challenge himself at a higher level could be tempting for the player, with other Premier League clubs, including Southampton, also expressing long-term interest. Championship rivals Leeds United are also eyeing a move for Clarke, but have secured a deal for Almeria’s Largie Ramazani.
Having enjoyed a strong start to the season, contributing a goal and an assist in Sunderland’s matches against Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday, losing Clarke would be a significant blow to Regis Le Bris’ squad. Despite fending off interest in the past, Ipswich’s bid surpasses previous offers, potentially putting Sunderland to the test, especially if other clubs enter the fray. While the Black Cats have insisted they are not in a rush to sell, Clarke’s contract situation leaves room for a potential move in this transfer window. Sunderland’s high valuation is partly influenced by a sell-on clause owed to Clarke’s former club Tottenham Hotspur.
