Albion are set to receive a substantial financial boost as former defender Dara O’Shea looks set to make a move from Burnley to Ipswich Town.
The Baggies could potentially earn over £1million from the transfer of the Republic of Ireland international to the newly promoted Premier League side.
Albion negotiated a 20 per cent sell-on clause in O’Shea’s transfer deal to Burnley, where he moved just over a year ago for £7m. This clause means that Albion will receive a portion of any profit made by Burnley on the defender, who originally came through the ranks at The Hawthorns.
Reports suggest that O’Shea, 25, is on the brink of a £15m switch to Portman Road, a deal that could potentially reach £20m with additional fees included. This means that Albion stands to earn 20 per cent of the £8m profit made by Burnley on O’Shea.
During his time at Burnley, O’Shea played a key role in their Premier League campaign, appearing in 35 out of 38 games and scoring four goals before their relegation.
Several clubs, including Wolves, were interested in O’Shea, but it is Ipswich who have secured his signature in a deal that will benefit Albion financially.
This windfall comes at an opportune time for Albion and their ownership group, providing a much-needed boost as they work to stabilize the club’s finances following the departure of former owner Guochuan Lai.
The funds could prove crucial as Albion aim to comply with financial regulations and avoid exceeding the £39m loss limit over a three-year period.
Meanwhile, head coach Carlos Corberan is looking to strengthen his squad further ahead of the transfer deadline, with a striker to replace the injured Brandon Thomas-Asante a key target. This addition is likely to be a loan move.
The injury to attacker Grady Diangana, who recently returned from a spell on the sidelines, may also prompt further activity in the transfer market for Albion as they seek to maintain their momentum in the Championship.
