The departure of long-standing player Liam Cooper has opened up opportunities for new leaders to emerge, with Ethan Ampadu now taking over as the team’s full-time captain. Pascal Struijk and Illan Meslier have also been named vice-captains, marking a fresh start for Leeds.
Patrick Bamford stands out as the only senior player left from the squad that achieved promotion under Marcelo Bielsa. Despite his past success, Bamford has struggled with form and fitness in recent seasons, falling behind Mateo Joseph in the competition for the number nine role. Former player Carlton Palmer believes Bamford’s fitness issues have impacted his performance, describing him as a shadow of his former self.
With a number of players departing in the summer, it may have been beneficial for Leeds and Bamford to part ways. However, his fitness concerns may have hindered any potential move. Regardless, Bamford will need to accept a reduced role this season and contribute his leadership off the field.
