A newly-formed panel within the Scottish FA has concluded that there were no errors made by VAR in last weekend’s matches. However, there was a disagreement over a penalty decision in the Rangers-Dundee game at Ibrox.
The Match Incident Review Panel, comprised of five individuals from Scottish football or the media, will convene weekly to assess key incidents from the previous weekend’s games. Each member votes on whether the on-field decision and any VAR involvement were correct, with decisions being made by majority vote.
In their latest review, the panel examined 17 incidents from the recent matches, including those involving VAR. Despite controversy surrounding a penalty awarded to Rangers against Dundee, the panel collectively agreed that the decision was correct. However, there was a split amongst the panel regarding another potential penalty incident involving the same players earlier in the match.
Ultimately, the panel ruled that the decision not to award Rangers a penalty in that particular incident was incorrect, despite VAR choosing not to intervene. The panel stated that the decision was more complex and subjective, leading to a close vote on whether a penalty should have been given.
In another match, all panel members agreed that the decision to issue a red card to Falkirk’s Michael McKenna in their game against Celtic was the correct call. Overall, the panel’s goal is to ensure fairness and accuracy in officiating decisions in Scottish football.
