FIFA has recently issued a severe penalty against Italian footballer Marco Curto, imposing a ten-match ban for racially discriminating against Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Hwang Hee-chan during a pre-season matchup with Como 1907 in July. According to a spokesperson for the international football governing body, as reported by Sky Sports, Curto has been found culpable of engaging in discriminatory behavior and has consequently been handed a ten-game suspension.
The sanction includes a probationary period of two years, during which five of the matches will be suspended. This decision was met with approval from Wolves’ director of football operations and administration, Matt Wild, who emphasized the importance of FIFA’s action in sending a clear message that racism and discrimination have no place in either football or society.
Following the incident, Curto made a transfer on loan from Como to Cesena in the Italian second-tier league. This incident underscores the commitment to eradicating racism from the footballing world and upholding the principles of equality and inclusivity. FIFA’s disciplinary action sets a precedent for the consequences of such unacceptable behavior within the sport.
