The downfall of Wolves since their return to the Premier League in 2018 can be attributed to three major mistakes they have made. Currently sitting at the bottom of the table with just one point from seven games, the Old Gold’s future in the league is in jeopardy.
One of the biggest blunders was the record signing of Fabio Silva in 2020. Despite the hefty £35 million price tag, the young striker has failed to make a significant impact, scoring only five goals for Wolves. Loaned out multiple times, Silva’s potential seems unlikely to be realized, and he could potentially leave the club on a free transfer.
Another critical error was letting go of manager Nuno Espirito Santo after a successful tenure. Nuno led Wolves from the Championship to the Europa League quarter-finals, but after a challenging 2020/21 season, he was dismissed. No manager since has been able to replicate his success, with Nuno continuing to thrive elsewhere.
Sending Adama Traore on loan to Barcelona in the midst of a promising season was the third harmful decision. Traore had been a key player in Wolves’ European qualification push, but his absence saw the team’s form plummet and ultimately led to a mid-table finish. The winger eventually left for Fulham on a free transfer, a costly loss for Wolves.
These three mistakes have played a significant role in Wolves’ decline, and unless changes are made, their Premier League stay could be in jeopardy.
