Wolves may come to rue their decision not to sign one particular target of Gary O’Neil’s during the summer transfer window.
The transfer window presented a mixed bag of outcomes for Molineux as they prepared for the 2024/25 season.
While the team managed to secure some promising young talents, the failure to secure a much-needed central defender has left Wolves with a significant gap in their squad this season, highlighting a clear misstep in their transfer strategy.
Among the players Wolves were said to have shown interest in was Samuel Omorodion, also known as Samu, who ultimately signed for FC Porto in August for a relatively modest fee of €15m (£12.7m).
Reports from HITC back in April had linked Wolves to the Spanish forward, with comparisons being drawn between Samu’s potential impact on the team and the success of Diogo Jota. Many saw him as a potential asset to O’Neil’s squad.
Unfortunately for Wolves, Samu’s performances since joining Porto have proven just how valuable he could have been. His recent standout display for Spain U21, where he scored four goals in a 6-0 victory over Malta U21 despite playing just 59 minutes, further underscores his talent.
With impressive performances in both the Europa League and the Portuguese top flight, it is clear that Samu has adapted well to the demands of European football. This only adds to the frustration for Wolves, who passed up the opportunity to bring him to Molineux.
As Samu continues to impress on the pitch, Wolves may find themselves regretting not taking a chance on the young striker, who is proving to be a rising star in the world of football.
