In the aftermath of Rangers’ defeat to Celtic in the League Cup final on Sunday, former referee Mike McCurry has criticized the SFA for their silence regarding the penalty claim made by Rangers. McCurry, who officiated until 2009, believes that Rangers should have been awarded a penalty for a shirt-pull on Vaclav Cerny by Liam Scales.
Despite referee John Beaton awarding Rangers a free-kick for the foul, VAR official Alan Muir did not intervene. McCurry is calling on the SFA to provide an explanation to fans about the error. He expressed frustration over the lack of clarity from the SFA and highlighted the need for VAR to be involved in crucial decisions like this one.
McCurry emphasized that the incident clearly warranted a penalty and questioned why VAR did not properly review the decision. He believes that in a cup final, such close calls should be thoroughly examined to ensure the correct outcome. The lack of transparency from the SFA has left Rangers fans outraged, with many feeling that the game’s outcome was influenced by the missed penalty call.
New CEO Patrick Stewart has also demanded answers from the SFA regarding the controversial incident, adding to the growing pressure on the governing body to address the issue.
