Chelsea fans were left outraged after witnessing what they deemed as the most controversial VAR call in history during Chelsea’s match against Ipswich at Portman Road on Monday.
In the 12th minute, Enzo Maresca’s side conceded a penalty that was won and scored by Liam Delap of Ipswich, marking his seventh goal of the season. However, fans took to social media to question the referee’s decision to award the penalty.
As Ipswich aggressively worked the ball forward, Leif Davis passed to Delap, who seemed to lose his balance and was then caught by Filip Jorgensen, leading to the referee awarding a penalty. Delap, who appeared to already be on the ground before contact was made, briefly got back up before falling again.
Despite fans and viewers questioning the VAR decision, it was confirmed that there was enough contact for a penalty to be awarded by the referee. Chelsea fans were further disappointed when a goal by Joao Felix was disallowed due to an offside ruling after VAR intervention, leaving the team trailing 1-0 at half-time.
