After a scuffle with an Ipswich staff member, Matheus Cunha faced a ban that was ultimately reduced when he offered to buy the man a new pair of glasses. Despite being found guilty of a serious offense by an independent commission, Cunha’s prompt apology and offer to pay for the damages helped mitigate the situation.
In a written statement, Cunha expressed remorse for his actions and explained that he never intended to harm the Ipswich employee. He admitted to grabbing the man’s glasses in a moment of panic and took full responsibility for his behavior. Wolves also confirmed that Cunha had offered to cover the cost of a replacement pair of glasses for the victim.
While the commission found Cunha’s explanation of events to be questionable and dismissed claims of provocation from the Ipswich staff member, they acknowledged the sincerity of his apology. As a result, Cunha’s three-match ban was reduced to two, and his fine was also decreased.
Despite Wolves’ attempt to argue for a one-match ban, the commission stood firm in their decision. They emphasized that even if the Ipswich security personnel were aggressive, it did not justify Cunha’s actions.
