Wolves were left regretting missing out on the opportunity to sign Viktor Gyokeres in 2023, losing the race to Coventry for the talented Swede. The striker’s future was uncertain after failing to secure promotion with his former club.
Originally the front runners to secure Gyokeres in the summer of 2023, Wolves were ultimately beaten to his signature by Sporting CP, partly due to Jeff Shi being out of the country during negotiations. The Swede’s staggering 54 goals in the 2024/25 season only added salt to the wound.
Despite finding success with another striker, Jorgen Strand Larsen, Wolves couldn’t shake off their link to Gyokeres. Even as he returned to his homeland after his impressive season, the spotlight continued to shine on him.
In a recent interview, Wolves manager Vitor Pereira humorously acknowledged Gyokeres’ talents, admitting that his team’s budget might not be able to accommodate the striker’s hefty price tag now. Pereira understood the financial limitations at the club, making a move for Gyokeres highly unlikely.
Gyokeres’ performances since Wolves’ interest have been nothing short of remarkable, with the Swede becoming a standout player at Sporting CP. Scoring an impressive 125 goals in 102 appearances for the Portuguese champions, he has established himself as one of the top talents in Europe.
While Wolves may have missed their chance to sign Gyokeres two years ago, Pereira knows that the striker’s path no longer leads back to Molineux. Despite the missed opportunity, the success Gyokeres has achieved since then speaks for itself.
