Sunderland has reportedly made the first move in contacting Ajax for a potential return of Jordan Henderson to the Stadium of Light in a stunning transfer. The Black Cats secured their return to the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United in the play-off final, with Henderson present at Wembley to witness his former club’s success.
After spending 12 years at Liverpool and achieving numerous accolades, including captaining the Reds to Champions League and Premier League victories, the 34-year-old midfielder left English football in 2023 to join Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia before making a quick return to Europe with Ajax.
Reports suggest that Sunderland and Ajax have begun discussions regarding the possibility of Henderson reuniting with his boyhood club, with the player having a year remaining on his contract with the Dutch side. While there were rumors of a potential transfer to AS Monaco earlier this year, Henderson expressed his affection for Sunderland as “his club” but insisted on staying with Ajax at the time.
Following Ajax’s narrow miss on the Eredivisie title, Henderson’s future at the club has come into question, especially with reports of him wanting to leave after the departure of manager Francesco Farioli.
